Kathmandu: CPN (UML) Chairman and outgoing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has sharply criticized the government, questioning how it intends to conduct upcoming elections while allegedly restricting his party from holding meetings and public events.
Speaking at a program in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Oli expressed anger over an incident in Bara where party General Secretary Shankar Pokharel and leader Mahesh Basnet were prevented from attending a National Youth Association Nepal gathering at Simara Airport. A clash had erupted between UML supporters and the Gen-G group, leading to disruptions at the airport.
“They don’t allow us to speak, they don’t allow us to hold meetings and conferences. Simara Airport was shut down. Will 50–60 people throwing stones close an entire airport? And this same government says it will hold elections. How will those who don’t allow meetings conduct elections?” Oli remarked.
He further accused the government of allowing vandalism and stone-pelting against UML cadres “in the name of Gen-G,” warning that such actions would not be tolerated. Calling for unity, he urged party leaders and supporters to move ahead together, saying the party was under attack from its opponents.
